Let’s be real - chatting to adults about difficult things can feel like navigating a minefield. Whether it’s mental health, bullying, or family problems, you might worry they’ll overreact, not understand, or worse, dismiss you entirely. But keeping tough stuff bottled up usually makes it heavier. As a **child therapist** in **Hertfordshire** running NLP4Kids, here’s what I’ve learned to help young people have these conversations. **Pick your moment.** Springing a serious talk on a parent while they’re rushing to work? Probably not ideal. Try: “Can we chat later when you’ve got time? It’s something important to me.” This gives them a heads-up to listen. Timing is key - choosing a moment when they’re less distracted can make a big difference in how the conversation goes. **NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)** has a great concept called “rapport” - basically, getting on the same wavelength. Mirroring their body language (subtly!) or starting with something you agree on can make the conversation flow better. For example: “I know you want me to do well in school, but lately, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed.” This shows you understand their perspective while also expressing your own. If face-to-face feels too intense, write it down. A letter or text can give you time to organise your thoughts - and them time to process before responding. Even starting with a journal can help you figure out what you want to say. Not all adults will react perfectly. Some might get emotional or go straight into “fix it” mode. When Smacking Crosses a Line – And Why the Law Is Catching Up

I've been wondering how it would go down if I slapped one of the girls in the office. Not for no reason – but let’s say, hypothetically, she made a mistake that caused a real problem in the business. I wouldn’t do it out of anger, just as a punishment. A way to “teach her a lesson.” Outrageous, right? When Physical Punishment Is Still Considered “Reasonable” Not only would it make me incredibly unpopular (and rightly so), I’d likely end up with a call from the police. Because adults have legal protection from being physically assaulted – even in the name of discipline. But children? In England and Northern Ireland, they don’t have the same level of protection. The current law allows “reasonable punishment” – a phrase so vague, it leaves the door wide open for all sorts of outcomes. Right now, there’s an open letter signed by 13 health and social care organisations, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Institute of Health Visiting. It’s being debated in the House of Lords alongside the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill. The conversation is this: should smacking children be illegal in England and Northern Ireland, just as it already is in Scotland and Wales? 🧠 “The law currently protects adults from assault more than it does children – our most vulnerable group.” When the Punishment Teaches the Wrong Lesson I wasn’t smacked often as a child. Just twice. Once by my dad, when I asked for soup instead of a full dinner while my mum was in hospital. He insisted I eat a meal I knew I couldn’t finish. When I tried to sneak off mid-meal and accidentally sent my plate flying across the room, I got smacked. He told me I could have my soup now and stormed off to the pub. The second time was my mum. She flicked water at me while brushing her teeth and giggling. I returned the favour – but harder – and got her work clothes wet. She smacked me too. But this time, I remember she was truly remorseful. In both cases, I wasn’t being destructive or malicious. I was a small child with small emotions and no real tools to express them. In both cases, what I learned was not “how to behave better,” but that my honesty or irritation was punishable, even if my actions weren’t intentional. “Many parents believe smacking is discipline – but if it truly worked, why do they have to do it more than once?” Why the Law Isn’t Just About Extremes – It’s About Clarity Of course, there are people who firmly believe in their right to use physical discipline. But I’d urge you to ask – does it work? Or does it just release your frustration while teaching a child nothing useful at all? The Cost of ‘Banter’ – When Dads Act Like Mates

There’s a parenting trend creeping in that we need to talk about – one that’s shaping how boys think about boundaries, respect, and manhood. More and more, I’m seeing boys in therapy who speak without filter – sexist, racist, offensive “banter” – and what’s shocking isn’t just what they say. It’s that they say it in front of their dads. And worse still, the dads defend it. When Dads Try to Be Mates Let’s be clear. Boys have always tested boundaries. But what’s new is that some no longer see the boundaries at all – especially when Dad is modelling himself as a mate, not a parent. In one recent session, a boy made an appallingly inappropriate comment in front of both parents. Historically, this kind of language was reserved for behind Mum’s back. Dad’s presence used to command a level of respect. But not this time. Not anymore. When I raised it, Dad shrugged. “It’s just banter,” he said. Mum later explained that the two of them have a “matey” relationship. 🧠 “If you act like their mate, don’t expect them to treat you like their parent.” Why ‘Banter’ Isn’t Harmless Here’s the issue: boys at 11, 12, or 13 don’t have the emotional intelligence or moral discernment to tell the difference between what’s “just a joke” and what’s deeply harmful. They don’t understand the nuance between ironic racism and actual bigotry. They can’t parse out what’s exaggerated, performative, or socially dangerous. So what do they do? They repeat it. At school. In public. Online. And eventually, they believe it. And let’s be honest – why are grown men saying this stuff around kids anyway? Your words are bricks in the house your child is building. What do you want that house to stand for? This isn’t about policing language. It’s about restoring leadership. If a child feels they’re on equal footing with their father – not as a learner, but as an equal in humour, values and voice – they’ll expect to be treated like a peer. So when you tell them to do their homework, tidy their room, or apologise to their sibling, they won’t comply. Why would they? You handed them the power. “Children who mimic adult disrespect aren’t failing to listen – they’re listening too closely.” The Danger of Displaced Hierarchies One parent said to me: “If my son listened to me, we wouldn’t have any behaviour problems.” But that’s just it. Your son is listening. He’s listening to the way you speak. He’s absorbing the “jokes.” He’s tracking how you laugh off what should be challenged. And then he pushes it further, because that’s what kids do. In therapy, I see the aftermath – boys who think they’re little men, whose compass for kindness, maturity and discipline is completely skewed. They aren’t emotionally equipped for the power they’ve been handed. And it shows. For many NLP4Kids practitioners, it’s an ideal setup – no rent to pay, no commute, and the flexibility to be close to family. But like most things that sound too good to be true, working from home with clients has its own quiet chaos. Why Schools Once Slammed the Door in Our Faces

When I first began approaching schools about mental health support back in 2007, the response wasn’t just lukewarm - it was hostile. One headteacher even rang me, absolutely furious, offended by the mere suggestion that there could be mental health issues in her school. It was a conversation that I’ll never forget, and one that shaped everything that came next. Back When Mental Health Was a Dirty Word in Schools In the early days of NLP4Kids, talking about children’s mental health was seen as scandalous. The idea that anxiety, confidence issues, or exam stress were impacting “ordinary” children? Not a chance. Back then, ADHD and autism were only seen as issues in severe, clearly diagnosable cases - no one was talking about spectrums yet. We were a good few years away from mental health becoming a mainstream concern, and even further from it becoming a funding priority in schools. But we saw the wave coming. Even if no one else did. "We opened the conversation on mental health in schools - long before anyone else was willing to." I’d been inspired by a speech from the former head of the NSPCC, who said that mental health was something that everyone had - it just depended on how healthy it was. That single sentence reframed everything I thought I knew. And it gave me the confidence to speak up. At first, our pitch was simple - we offered to help schools apply for external funding to cover the cost of our support. We wrote 90% of the application for them. All they had to do was say yes. But even that wasn’t enough. The Cost of Doing the Right Thing (Too Soon) Teachers were too busy. Sometimes, the person championing our work would leave mid-term. Sometimes, the funders and the schools couldn’t agree - one wanted support during curriculum hours, the other insisted those hours be reserved for academics only. And despite our best efforts, we quickly learned that this route - though well-meaning - wasn’t sustainable. So we pivoted. We leaned into the buzz we’d created. Some schools began seeing results. Practitioners were making breakthroughs with children. A few schools even began pulling together their own funds from pupil premium, or in some cases, charging parents directly to continue the work. It wasn’t easy. It took time. But we proved that our model worked - and children were visibly thriving because of it. The 9-Year-Old Who Called Out Her Parents Without Saying a Word

Sometimes it isn’t the child that needs fixing. Sometimes, they’re just the loudest voice in a household silently screaming for change. This is a story about a client I once worked with - a little girl who, at just nine years old, was carrying the emotional weight of her entire family on her shoulders. What looked like a mental health issue was, in truth, something much more tangled. When It’s Not the Child Who Needs Help She came to me after being thrown out of her after-school club. Her screams were so intense that neighbours had called the police more than once. You might assume she was emotionally unstable or had a condition that needed urgent intervention. But as is often the case in the work we do within this coaching franchise, the surface symptoms were only part of the story. This wasn’t just a child struggling. This was a child surviving in a deeply dysfunctional home. Mum was disengaged, a self-confessed workaholic barely involved in her daughter’s life. When Jemma first came into my life, she was just three years old. She was one of my key children at a private nursery, and it quickly became obvious that she was selectively mute. She wouldn’t talk to me, the other staff, or even the other children. But she could speak, she just chose not to. That’s when I made it my mission to help her find her voice. He Thought He Was Just Forgetful - Then This Happened

When it comes to the NLP4Kids syllabus, we save something special for the end. In fact, I sometimes worry that teaching memory skills last means it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Because while it might look like a fun activity to impress parents at the end of a workshop, this technique is far more than that. It’s transformational. It Looks Like a Trick - But It’s a Breakthrough The memory skills strategy I teach isn't one I created myself. Unlike some of the NLP techniques I’ve adapted or built from scratch, this one is modelled from the world’s most successful memory champions. It’s designed to be delivered in a child-friendly, engaging way - and when we teach it in NLP4Kids training, it always creates that wide-eyed moment of shock and delight in the children who use it. One of my favourites is called the Linking Technique. I get a group to generate a list of 20-30 completely random objects, ideas, or concepts. Then, within about 15 minutes, I teach them how to recall the entire list - in order - forwards and backwards. Yes, backwards. And it works. Every time. 👉 The Linking Technique makes every item unforgettable - because we turn each one into its own “dog on the playground.” (If you read my recent email, you’ll remember the theory: nobody remembers a regular day at school, but everyone remembers the day a dog got onto the playground. The unusual sticks. The ordinary slips away.) He Believed His Brain Was Broken - Until This Let me tell you about a boy I once worked with. He was seriously underperforming in school. These days, he might have been referred for assessments around neurodiversity, but back then, those conversations weren’t happening the way they are now. So instead, the labels came in thick and fast: lazy, unmotivated, disengaged. And after hearing it over and over again from teachers and parents alike, he started believing it. He came into our first session and told me, in no uncertain terms, that the problem was his brain. It didn’t work like other people’s. He couldn’t focus. Couldn’t remember. Couldn’t learn. The worst part? He believed he couldn’t change. He thought the information just wasn’t going in at all. Not anxiety, not pressure - just a hopeless, broken sponge that couldn’t absorb anything important. So I knew where I had to start: his beliefs. I needed to show him - in real time - that change was not only possible, it was easy. His Whole World Lit Up in 15 Minutes In that very first session, we created a list of 25 random words. Then we made it weird. Wild. Unforgettable. Using the Linking Technique, we made each word memorable by turning it into a story so bizarre, so image-rich and animated, that his brain couldn’t help but remember it. At first, he rolled his eyes. No faith in it at all. But by the end? His whole posture had shifted. His energy had lifted. His eyes were wide and shining. And when I asked him to try reciting the list in reverse - and he did it - he looked stunned. Not just proud. Stunned. That single moment discredited years of disempowering beliefs. You’ll Never Guess What He Said at His Final Session

Sometimes, the most powerful feedback we receive doesn’t come in the form of a polished Google review or a perfectly worded video testimonial. In the world of NLP4Kids, our clients are often too young to fully articulate the changes they’ve experienced or the gratitude they feel. The Story I Never Forgot Many years ago - well over a decade now - I worked with a young boy who had already experienced more trauma by the age of 11 than most people do in a lifetime. He’d been adopted from within his own family after suffering abuse from parents who battled substance misuse. As a baby, he had sustained brain damage due to shaken baby syndrome, which also affected his vision. He was attending mainstream school, but his learning was slower, and as he got older, anxiety began to creep in. By the time he came to me, he was avoiding the outside world altogether - no longer walking to the shops, no longer playing at the park, and self-isolating long before the rest of us ever associated that phrase with C-19. 👉 At first, it seemed like typical social anxiety. But the truth, once I understood it, was far more raw and complex. When I asked him why he avoided going out, he shared his fear of running into young people from the local traveller community. And honestly? He had every reason to be afraid. I had worked with many children from that community in schools and was well aware that their cultural norms could include a very different approach to respect, authority, and confrontation. His concerns weren’t irrational. He lived close to the site. He looked different. He was vulnerable. He knew it - and that’s what made it even more real. The Truth Behind the Testimonial At the time, I didn’t realise just how deep this ran. Looking back now, with more experience and a wider perspective, I believe that what he was truly communicating was a fundamental fear: I’m not safe in this world. And why would he believe he was? Why I Travelled to Bulgaria (by Coach!) for the NLP4Kids Book

Sometimes it’s cramped cupboards, endless pallets, and a coach trip across Eastern Europe that pushes every comfort zone you’ve got 😅. How One Webinar Series Became a Book - And a Mission Some of our best NLP4Kids products started small - a simple idea or a question from a parent. But one of our most impactful began as a webinar series. From that came the NLP4Kids book - and it was a project I decided to self-publish. Self-publishing might sound empowering… and it is. But it’s also a massive job. You don’t just write the thing - you design, print, store, ship, promote and distribute. And I wanted it done right. The publisher name I used? “I Blame My Age.” That’s actually an anagram of someone you probably know quite well by now 😉. 📚 “It wasn’t just a book. It became one of our biggest tools for reaching parents, professionals and schools - and it took over every inch of space I had.” Printing Problems and a Pallet Full of Perseverance Keeping costs low but quality high was my mission. So I scoured the UK printing options. But none gave me the combination of affordability and excellence I wanted. Eventually, I found a printer in Bulgaria. So off I went. By coach. Each of our attendees completed a profile, and (with their permission!) the results were shared with the group. What we discovered was fascinating. There were common threads, patterns, and traits that many of our most successful licensees shared. And knowing that has been incredibly useful for me - it means I can usually tell quite quickly whether someone is likely to thrive in our children’s franchise. But instead of giving you a breakdown of their DISC results, let me paint you a picture of the kinds of people who do really well in this work… The people who succeed here are compassionate, teachable, and driven by a powerful desire to make a difference. Some come from the corporate world - high-flyers who eventually grew disillusioned or burned out, and who wanted something more meaningful in their lives. Others have walked the path of caring: for family members, as part of a formal career, or simply because they were the ones others always turned to. What We All Have in Common Many of our practitioners have personal or professional experience with mental health or neurodiversity. Quite a few were teachers or social workers, frustrated by a system that made it near impossible to create change in the way - or at the speed - they knew was necessary. What they all share is a deep-seated drive to improve the lives of young people. The Rising Pressure They see the rising pressures our children face, and they want to do something about it. Whether they have experience in business and technology or not, they’re open-minded, eager to learn, and humble enough to be taught - even when they already know a lot. They’re coachable, and they follow our roadmap. Why reinvent the wheel when we’ve been refining the system for over a decade? But they’re also independent. They don’t want to be micromanaged. They want freedom and flexibility, just as much as they want purpose. The people who thrive at NLP4Kids care deeply about their communities, their personal growth, and the world their children are growing up in. They’re not afraid to ask for help - and they offer it freely to others. There’s a real sense of camaraderie here, and our practitioners genuinely care about one another’s success. And while they’re in it for the emotional reward of transforming a young life, they’re also savvy. They want financial independence. They want freedom. They want a coaching franchise that gives them all of that - and makes a meaningful impact. They’re a good bunch. I Tore Up The NLP Books and Started Again

Are you curious about what really goes on in the NLP4Kids training, and how it differs from standard NLP? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get asked, especially when people are considering the Silver Level training. So today, let me take you behind the scenes… The Difference Between NLP and NLP4Kids The Silver Level training is where we begin to dive deep into applying NLP strategies specifically for children and young people. If you’ve already done some kind of NLP training before, you’ll know that the techniques can sometimes feel a little… clunky. There are complicated terminologies, long-winded processes, and a step-by-step sequence that’s not always easy to follow—especially not if you’re under 18! That’s where NLP4Kids changes the game. Our children’s franchise doesn’t just use NLP, it transforms it. We didn’t just shrink NLP down for children - we redesigned it from the ground up to meet their unique emotional needs. I started by identifying which processes were genuinely useful for young people. After all, a child’s challenges are often worlds apart from those of an adult. I took apart every step of those original techniques to find what was essential, what could be ditched, and what needed to be added to make them both digestible and emotionally relevant for a younger audience. It was like performing a surgical dissection—looking at each part of a process and saying, “Is this vital? Or is it just fluff?” In some ways, it’s similar to strategy elicitation in NLP: isolating what actually works, not just what we’re used to doing out of habit or tradition. The result? A refined, restructured, child-centred approach to NLP that goes beyond what typical NLP training offers. And the best part is, it’s not just theory. These strategies were tested and refined over years of working directly with children before they ever made it into our training programme. Scientific Proof That It Works Unlike most NLP approaches, which are often supported by anecdotal stories and testimonials, NLP4Kids is different. We’ve got the scientific data to back it up. Ten of our NLP4Kids techniques were included in a university-led research project with BPP University, looking into how NLP-based strategies can help children aged 7-11 reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Using the Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), the results showed a scientifically significant improvement in the mental wellbeing of the young participants.
